Things to Do in Boise, Idaho This Week: September 4 Through 16

The stretch from Friday, September 4 through Wednesday, September 16 brings a Fleetwood Mac tribute, a Belarusian post-punk trio, a hardcore band with forty-odd years on the road, an outdoor blues show under the foothills, a home football game, and a folk singer for anyone skipping the stadium. We picked seven from the full calendar.

Tell Me Lies, a Fleetwood Mac Tribute

A tribute band working through the Fleetwood Mac catalog, Rumours and the rest, is an easy way to open the weekend. It is a late start, so eat first. Tickets and details are on the event page.

Rock of Ages

The jukebox musical stitched together from 1980s hair-metal singles runs two weekends at the community theater on Fort Street, with evening shows and 3:00 pm matinees on Sunday, September 6 and Saturday, September 12. It is loud and silly on purpose, and a good pick if you want theater without a heavy plot.

Molchat Doma

The Belarusian trio plays cold, synth-driven post-punk that found an unlikely second audience online a few years ago, and the songs are in Russian. Expect a dark room and a crowd that knows the words anyway. A Monday show means an early night by downtown standards.

Black Flag

The Black Flag name has been on hardcore records since the late 1970s, and the current lineup still tours on that catalog. The Shrine is a small room for a band with this history, so the show will feel close and loud. Wear something you do not mind sweating through.

Bonnie Raitt with Jon Cleary

An outdoor show at the botanical garden in the second week of September is close to the best the Boise calendar offers. Raitt's slide guitar and blues-leaning songbook suit a lawn crowd, and New Orleans pianist Jon Cleary opens. Bring a layer for after the sun drops behind the foothills.

Boise State vs. Memphis

The blue turf hosts Memphis in a late-afternoon kickoff, which means tailgating through the warm part of the day and a finish after dark. Streets around the university clog from midafternoon on, so give the drive extra time or walk over from downtown.

Sean Rowe and Lee Penn Sky

If football is not your Saturday, the folk singer with the low baritone plays the small room on 11th Street with Lee Penn Sky opening. It is the quieter end of the weekend, and the 9:00 pm start leaves time for dinner first.

That is seven picks out of twenty-odd events on our calendar for these two weeks. The rest, including the other showtimes for the musical, are listed there with times and ticket links, and we would check the listing before heading out since start times move.
